-The Best and Worst Angelino Eateries-
Come broke-da-mouth with me as I travel around Los Angeles and see what's doin in the kitchen's, trucks, street-carts, and strip malls of our fair city!

Lucky Boy Drive In - Arroyo Pkwy/Pasadena

Tucked away in plain sight, Lucky Boy Drive In is one of the few remaining greasy spoons the city of Pasadena has left. I have been coming to this drive in since the summer of 1985.
As a kid, a burger here was Christmas in my mouth and now as an adult, each burger or 1.6lb bacon-breakfast burrito is nearly 30 years of pure comfort in a single bite.  It's definitely a local spot.
The whole of Pasadena is represented here in their customer base. Generations of loyal customers pepper the dining room and filter out into the patio; this is where the Angelinos of Pasadena come to lay their burdens down.

The Breakfast Burrito-

I understand that it’s a bold move to review something as ubiquitous in Los Angeles as the Breakfast burrito, but in its category, Lucky Boy Drive In has cemented this bacon-laden jewel into the Crown of the Valley.  Please watch the following video(courtesy of LuckyBoy).

La Pergola - Ventura blvd./Sherman Oaks

This is a quaint family style Italian restaurant located in sunny Sherman Oaks.  I can not rave enough about this place. I've been eating here for about 14 years now and never have I had an "iffy" meal. It's perfect for a romantic night out. Unpretentious in every way. This offers what I imagine to be a small slice of Italy.

  • Did I mention that they have a garden in which the veggies you eat are hand picked daily? Well they do and when their Zucchini flowers are in season you get smacked in the face with  fresh garden flavor.
  • The wine selection is great and almost moderately priced.
  • Veal? Forget about it!  It's so tender that you barely need to chew, like butter it melts in your mouth.
I could go on and on about this place, but if I did you'd be reading this instead of eating there. Go!  Run and get you some La Pergola!

GO BURGER- Sunset and Vine

I'd heard great things about this burger joint and I REALLY wanted it to be spectacular. It's not terrible, but it's not great either...for a burger joint the prices are just way to high.

Here's What I had:

Duck Fat Fries- tasty...but expensive. Basically French Fries en confit, should have had more crunch to them, probably hit or miss.

Smashed Burger:  Bland meat patty on a bun, no tomato, greens or frills of any kind.  I ordered the temperature Med/rare (cause I like a little pink in the center)....I got medium.  The burger patty was terribly small, bun was bigger (never a good sign) @ 4inches wide by 1/2 inch tall.  cost $14...ouch!

Guinness Beer:  This was the highlight of my meal. On tap, how can  you go wrong!
Total Cost for 2 burgers, fries, a beer and a soda = $60.00

Service:

Service was impeccable. Charming, personable, and the kind of server everyone wishes could follow you around from restaurant to restaurant .

I'll go back for happy hour, the prices seemed more reasonable.
